Pre/Post Natal Care

Osteopathy can be incorporated into pre and post natal care. Treatment during pregnancy can relieve the aches and pains that occur within the mother’s body as the baby grows. Over a period of time the burden of the extra weight can cause changes in the spine and place extra pressure on the joints, knees and feet as well internal organs and the diaphragm. We have seen cases where bowel function has been impaired, while some patients develop a lazy colon due to their sedentary lifestyle. It is not unusual for us to see women with chronic digestive disorders. We commonly help expectant mothers with lower back, hip, pelvic and shoulder problems.

The trauma of childbirth can also place significant pressure on the pelvis, bladder and joints so we advise mothers to book a post-natal check up between four and six weeks after birth and then six months later to determine any structural changes that may have occurred in their body.

If aches and pains are left undiagnosed, they invariably worsen over a period of time and often a longer treatment course is needed so we encourage women to incorporate a pilates regime into their lifestyle – which is the norm in other European countries.

Common post natal problems

  • Urinary dysfunction due to weak pelvic floor muscles following childbirth
  • Back dysfunction
  • Digestive disorders
  • Headaches
  • Postural changes / poor posture
  • Mechanical strains
  • The loss of functional curves in the spine
  • Dowager’s Hump

As previously mentioned, in some European countries it is commonplace for a mother to undergo a course of pelvic floor rehabilitation and exercise following childbirth as this has been shown to reduce costs to the healthcare system further down the line. Unfortunately this does not happen in the UK.

Booking periodic reviews with your osteopath makes complete sense. Our pilates team also offers pre and post natal care and we can provide comprehensive programmes to help you through these difficult times and help your body return to its pre-baby state.
